Visiting Brooklyn Brewery.

Last October and November I did an internship at Brooklyn Brewery as a part of my program for school. For five weeks I was interning in production. I was in the brew house, the cellar, packaging and I even got the chance to work in the lab for a couple of days. The whole team at the brewery is awesome and they made me feel at home instantly. Yesterday I paid them a visit for the first time since my internship.

I took the chance to talk to three of them and introduce some of the guys behind the beer. From where the malt gets ground to the finished bottles are packed in boxes ready to go out  an be enjoyed by people. Here’s five quick questions for each one of them:

Justin Rick, Brewer (image courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery):

1. How long have you worked at BB?
Three years.

2. Your favorite BB beer?
Sorachi Ace.

3. Your favorite brewery other than BB?
Stone Brewing, but I used to work there, so I’m a bit biased. Firestone Walker and Great Divide are great breweries too.

4. Your favorite beer bar i NYC?
Pony bar. And Blind Tiger when it’s not crowded. When it is, it takes too long to get to the bar.

5. When is your favorite time to have a beer?
All the time! Especially after a really hard workout. An unfiltered beer, because the yeast is a source of B vitamins and protein.

Scott Simpson, Cellarman:

1. How long have you worked at BB?
10 months.

2. Your favorite BB beer?
In terms of special beers, K is for Kriek and as for the perennials the Pilsner.

3. Your favorite brewery other than BB?
I had my first craft beer from Terrapin Beer co, a rye pale ale, which blew my mind and got me in to craft beer. So that brewery will always be special for me.

4. Your favourite beer bar in NYC?
Brooklyn Brewery’s tap room. My friend’s already there.

5. When is your favorite time to have a beer?
It’s usually the first beer after a very long shift making beer.
