Maja Barleywine – Review.

Finally! The beer that our friends at Omnipollo and Hair Of The Dog brewed about a year ago is done. We went to the bottle release at Hair Of The Dog in SE Portland and got ourselves some bottles. We also tasted some delicious Omnipollo beers on tap at what HotD called “Omnipollo Day”.

Beer: MAJA
Brewery: Hair Of The Dog Brewing Company & Omnipollo
Style: Vanilla Maple Bourbon Barleywine
ABV: 10.8%

Appearance: The beer has a beautiful amber color. It’s a bit hazy and has a light foam head when poured, but it does get a fuller head after swirling the glass.

Aroma: A subtle bourbon smell, together with notes of caramel. Some hints of oak and booziness.

Taste: Very sweet with loads of caramel flavor. No distinct vanilla or maple at first, but the vanilla comes through in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied that leaves a soft feeling on the tongue.

Overall: A really tasty Barleywine. Feels more British than American in the style. Not too heavy, despite the high ABV and sweetness.
